Paul is our resident guitarist, roadie and Man With A Van. A veteran in the biz, he’s always down for a chinwag, a Dire Straits jam or an enormous cup of coffee. When he’s not mentoring his future rockstars, he’s providing the soundtrack to people’s weddings, birthdays and corporate events (and then regaling Alison with the horror stories…who knew so many fights broke out at wedding receptions?!) You can find out more about Paul below, and if you’ve got an event coming up that needs some tunes, check out his company Top Notch Entertainment @ www.top-notch.com.au
What podcast/album/playlist are you listening to right now? Best of The Eagles, I need to learn a few of their songs for an upcoming gig.
Who are your favourite Melbourne artists right now? Opal Ocean (2 guitarists of course!!)
What did you want to be when you were a kid? Happy!
What is your secret talent? I used to be a competitive dancer and teacher travelling Australia. And even represented Australia in the Australasian Championships… didn’t win, just came 4th - but pretty darn happy with that!!! Even got on the TV for it once or twice.
What made you choose your instrument? Common sense… I started playing the drums first, but found it too difficult. Then I went to the piano, but found it hard to practice as we didn’t have a piano at home. I pestered my older sister to use her old guitar, and I still have that today. Don’t worry, she doesn’t need it anymore!
What three things would you take on a desert island? A guitar, my dog, and some company!
What song do you never want to hear again? Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect” as I’ve had to play it a GAZILLION times at weddings…
What is your favourite thing about teaching? Getting paid! Haha no, seeing a student’s face light up with a huge smile when they realise they can actually recognise the songs they’ve been trying to play for a while, and finally achieved it.
If you were in a band, what would it be called and what style would you play? Hard rock… and something with “Psychos” in the name. I like playing my electric guitars LOUD and angry like!!!
What is your favourite way to spend Sunday? With a friend(s) sitting in a cafe or winery just relaxing and talking about anything. No pressure, just enjoying each other’s company.
What advice would you give to your 12 year old self? Don’t listen to anyone who says you can’t do it. I CAN DO IT, REGARDLESS OF WHAT YOU SAY. You doom and gloomers won’t take me down!!
Can you cook? What is your signature dish? I cook a mean salmon or a chicken satay - hard to choose really, depends what mood I’m in!
Who would play you in a movie about your life? Adam Sandler, of course!!… who else has an egg shaped head???
What kind of animal do you relate to? A bird in a cage, because I feel like my life as a performer is constantly being watched by people on the outside.
If you weren't a musician, what would you be doing? I have no idea! Maybe a vet (although I couldn’t stand the thought of having to go to Uni). It would have to be something helping people or animals in some way, though.
